At Awakenings Treatment Center, our clinical staff is experienced and skilled in treating children and adults with conditions like ASD, ADHD, and Asperger’s syndrome. We are an Aspergers treatment center to use custom therapies to reduce symptoms and improve development.

Is Autism different from Asperger's syndrome?

Asperger is a developmental disorder that falls under Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with Asperger's have difficulty with social interaction and communication. Furthermore, they may also display qualities of restricted or repetitive patterns in behaviors. Aspergers is a milder type of autism but lasts life-long. Children with Asperger’s start showing symptoms as early as two years of age.

Like ASD, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment approach for Aspergers. Certain therapies can help in improving communication skills, obsessive interests, repetitive behaviors, and physical clumsiness. At our Aspergers treatment center, we offer social skills training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, CBT, and speech therapy to reduce symptoms and improve development. What are the symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome?

Most parents find out developmental abnormalities in their children between ages 18-24 months. Some of the common signs that parents notice in children with Asperger's include:

  • Lack of eye contact
  • Awkward in social situations
  • Inability to respond to social cues and conversations in general
  • Obsessive interests on certain topics or objects
  • Repetition of phrases or behaviors, etc

We use developmental questionnaires and other measurement tools along with clinical judgment to arrive at a precise diagnosis. Call us for appointments.

Treatment for Asperger's Syndrome

Your doctor may suggest a set of therapies to improve your child's condition based on his/her unique needs. Some of the most common treatments include:

  • Social skills training - Your child will participate in group sessions where our therapists will work to help him interact with others and improve communication skills.
  • Speech-language therapy - This therapy focuses on your child's communication skills. We aim to correct the flat tone that your child uses when he communicates. We also give lessons on maintaining conversations, understanding social cues, and avoiding repetitive phrases.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) - With the help of CBT, our therapists can alter the way your child thinks. This will equip him to control his emotions and avoid repetitive behaviors.

We also educate the parents on how they can train their child at home to improve their social skills. For more information on Asperger's visit or call us today.

Risk factors for Asperger's syndrome

Boys are more affected by Aspergers than girls. Premature babies and children born to older parents often suffer from Aspergers. Furthermore, children and adults with medical conditions like Fragile X syndrome, epilepsy, Tourette syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis are at high risk for this condition. Individuals with a family history of ASD also have a high chance of inheriting the condition.

The symptoms of this condition are manageable with early intervention. At Awakenings Treatment Center, we focus on helping your child to do well in school. Visit our Aspergers Treatment Center for diagnosis and evaluation.
