The LGBTQ Mental Health & Addiction Treatment Program
According to Eliseo Pérez-Stable, director of the National Institute on Minority Health & Health Disparities, “Mounting evidence indicates that SGM populations have less access to health care and higher burdens of certain diseases, such as depression, cancer, and HIV/AIDS.
The formal designation of the LGBTQ population is sexual and gender minorities (SGM), which NIH says includes LGBTQ people as well as “those whose sexual orientation, gender identity and expressions, or reproductive development varies from traditional, societal, cultural or physiological norms.” The challenges innate in being part of a marginalized community are significant, and the need for additional resources for improved healthcare is paramount.
Recognizing a growing need for additional LGBTQ mental health and addiction support, Awakenings Treatment Center offers a specific track focused on the unique needs of these individuals. It is our intention to cultivate a sense of the LGBTQ community and safety that is lacking and in the Ventura County area and beyond. Regardless of how you identify in terms of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, We are here to support you and your family on your path of discovery.
We provide a safe and confidential space to process many different issues and concerns including, but not limited to, coming out, gender and/or sexual identities, bullying, healing trauma and grief, relationship concerns, mental health challenges, workplace issues, and self-esteem. We offer psychoeducation around HIV and AIDS, safer sex, and reproduction concerns.
Awakenings Treatment Center also offers robust family support through weekly individual family therapy and a monthly family day to support the allies, no matter where they are on their journey. Anti-LGBTQ bias frequently leads to adverse health and mental health outcomes. Thus, educating and supporting the clients’ support system is a priority.
When LGBTQ clients present for treatment at Awakenings Treatment Center, regardless of their primary purpose for seeking help, they will have an opportunity to work through their mental health challenges, addiction concerns, binge eating struggles, chronic pain, and relationship issues with a group of their LGBTQ peers. This community will allow for the presenting problems to be addressed in an environment where they can be their authentic selves. Our team looks forward to providing all clients a safe and supportive landing place to complete their work and move toward improved health.
