LGBT+ Program

According to Eliseo Pérez-Stable, director of the National Institute on Minority Health & Health Disparities, “Mounting evidence indicates that SGM populations have less access to health care and higher burdens of certain diseases, such as depression, cancer and HIV/AIDS.  The formal designation of the LGBT population is sexual and gender minorities (SGM), which NIH says includes LGBT people as well as “those whose sexual orientation, gender identity and expressions, or reproductive development varies from traditional, societal, cultural or physiological norms.”  The challenges innate in being part of a marginalized community are significant, and the need for additional resources for improved healthcare are paramount.

Recognizing a growing need for additional LGBT+ mental health and addiction support in Ventura County, Awakenings Treatment Center offers a specific track focused on the unique needs of these individuals. It is our intention to cultivate a sense of LGBT+ community and safety that is lacking and in the Ventura County area.  Regardless of how you identify in terms of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, Awakenings is here to support you and your family on your path of discovery. We provide a safe and confidential space to process many different issues and concerns including, but not limited to, coming out, gender and/or sexual identities, bullying, healing trauma and grief, relationship concerns, mental health challenges, workplace issues, and self-esteem.  We offer psychoeducation around HIV and AIDS, safer sex, and reproduction concerns.

Awakenings also offers robust family support through weekly individual family therapy and a monthly family day to support the allies, no matter where they are on their journey. Anti-LGBT bias frequently leads to adverse health and mental health outcomes. Thus, educating and supporting the clients’ support system is a priority.

When LGBT+ clients present for treatment at Awakenings, regardless of their primary purpose for seeking help, they will have an opportunity to work through their mental health challenges, addiction concerns, binge eating struggles, chronic pain and relationship issues with a group of their LGBT+ peers.  This community will allow for the presenting problems to be addressed in an environment where they can be their authentic selves.  The Awakenings team looks forward to providing all clients a safe and supportive landing place to complete their work and move toward improved health.
