PTSD-Trauma

At Awakenings Treatment Center, we are mindful of the challenges faced by men and women to discuss painful, traumatic material with members of the opposite gender present, given the nature of group discussions, which often include sexual trauma. To provide the safest and most sensitive environment possible, Awakenings conducts separate Gender Specific Trauma Programs, allowing clients to spend the bulk of their treatment day primarily with same gendered peers. At Awakenings, we find that gender specific trauma groups allow deeper, more intimate sharing among peers.

What are the Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

When a person is unable to deal with traumatic events, he or she will often feel isolated and struggle with ever-present feelings of worry, fear, and worthlessness. Trauma sufferers often have difficulty in relationships and dealing with emotional challenges, as well as low self-esteem due to traumatic experiences.

Memories haunt trauma victims that feel completely real, and can cause survivors to become silent sufferers who believe their lives are destined to repeat past events. Experiences in a person’s life can trigger recurring experiences of the original trauma, which makes healing from the original trauma an important goal. It is also common for trauma survivors to have issues with drug addiction, alcohol addiction, or eating disorders, as they attempt to cope with the original issues and associated painful feelings.
