Don’t let seasonal and holiday blues ruin your fall and winter

Don’t Let the Seasonal and Holiday Blues Ruin Your Happiness!

As the days get shorter and the holiday season kicks in, it’s common to experience the “Holiday Blues.” These include feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness, and an exacerbation of existing mental health complaints.

At Awakenings Treatment Center, therapists notice an increase in clients with depression and other mental health challenges during this time of year. Dr. Shari Corbitt, our founder, believes that individuals must seek emotional support if they struggle during the late fall and winter months.

Don’t Suffer in Silence

“Please don’t suffer in silence,” says Dr. Corbitt. “So many of us are going through challenges right now, and we shouldn’t feel alone. Professional mental health treatment can help improve the quality of life. We strive to help our clients regain joy and hope during the winter and holidays, and empower them to navigate through negative feelings, loss, and trauma.”

An estimated 10 million Americans experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Many more people likely suffer mild symptoms. “SAD” is characterized by prolonged sadness that recurs simultaneously each year. Usually in the fall and winter months, when days are shorter and there is less light.

Symptoms include feeling depressed most of the day, losing interest in activities, changes in weight or appetite, sleep problems, and difficulty concentrating. The holidays can also trigger the “holiday blues,” feelings of anxiety or depression often sparked by stress, unrealistic expectations, loneliness, or the memory of lost loved ones.

Seeking Help is Not a Weakness

Remember, seeking help for challenges like these is not a weakness, it’s an act of strength. We urge those experiencing mental health and addiction difficulties this season to reach out and get the support they need and deserve.
